However, the case appears to be made of a soft black leather, with the hidden and piped seams of yesteryear, and the very professional stitching and binding of Chinese tailors; the lining is of foam-backed cloth, what we used to call "tricot"; the Velcro fastener, though perhaps not so durable as the snaps of yesteryear, is certainly fast to open and to secure, with no zippers or snaps or locks to fool with or break; it neatly and closely fits my Nikon D90 with its kit lens VR 18-105mm with the lens hood reversed and attached, and a UV filter and lens cap in place; the "Nikon" nameplate is metallic-looking, not just stamped on the leather, and attached to the nose, for those of you who like to advertise and are not satisfied with merely the flaming, screaming yellow "Nikons" distributed the length of the strap which came supplied with the camera.

At first I had purchased a nylon LowePro case, which did have one extra pocket in the top: but as soon as the UV filter was on the camera, the nylon zippers were stressed from the sheer length of the camera; and in any case, the case fit the camera so snugly (although certainly securely) that getting the camera out of the case in a timely fashion became an issue. So I had returned that case to the vendor--oh, if only it had been an inch deeper, and perhaps 1/16th inch looser overall!--and was waiting not too impatiently for the "official" case to arrive.

Thanks to Amazon, by the way, I didn't have long to wait--I ordered late on Saturday, March 20, 2010, and the item was delivered (free shipping) before 10AM today, March 24th, 2010.

For me, such a case has two functions only: to minimize the dust which makes it to the camera body and lens when the camera is not in use but not yet returned to the fitted camera bag, and to offer some shelter to the camera when we find ourselves in a torrential downpour on the naked top of some Mayan temple. Most of the time when the camera is being used, such a case should be sitting on a tabletop or on a log somewhere, nowhere near the camera. This case's one-piece construction is admirable for ease of discard. But for those of you who put things down and can never find them again, there is a little snapped strap which would keep the case attached to the camera strap, and thank God this case is nowhere near as heavy as the old Nikon SLR "ready cases"! So my advice would be, be careful what you wish for--this lemonade is pretty good! on Sale!
